The purpose of this concert was to introduce young students to the orchestra and expose them to symphonic music. This year‘s theme was American music with an emphasis on what makes American music sound American. Some of the selections included Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” (ragtime), Charles Ives’s finale from “Symphony No. 2” (patriotic/nationalism), a Duke Ellington arrangement (jazz), and, of course, John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (American march). These concerts are given every year at no charge to the school. Other schools in attendance from PAISD were Adams Elementary, Port Acres Elementary, and Sam Houston Elementary.
